El cantautor Jack Johnson escribe canciones que simplemente se sienten bien, siguiendo una ecuación que combina su voz cálida y relajada con una guitarra acústica. Esa fórmula acogedora lo convirtió en uno de los favoritos entre las multitudes universitarias estadounidenses, por lo que no sorprende que Johnson se quede con lo que mejor sabe hacer para su tercer álbum, In Between Dreams. El productor Mario Caldato, Jr. está de regreso, retocando el telón de fondo veraniego de Johnson para otro divertido conjunto de canciones. El encanto y la dulzura de la mezcla de géneros que impulsaron Brushfire Fairytales y On and On no ha cambiado tanto, pero ¿realmente tiene que hacerlo? Johnson, junto con el baterista Adam Topol y el bajista Merlo Podlewski, hace discos seguros. Si bien no hay nada de malo en eso, tomar algunos riesgos más sónicos y líricos no funcionaría en su contra. Momentos tiernos como “If I Could” y “No Other Way” muestran un lado más reservado en In Between Dreams. Otros aspectos destacados incluyen la canción de cuna “Breakdown” y los ritmos de bossa nova de “Do You Remember”. Ya sea que esté cantando sobre estar enamorado, lo que hace bastante bien en “Better Together” y “Banana Pancakes”, o reflexionando sobre sus dificultades, el enfoque relajado de Johnson es su mayor fortaleza. In Between Dreams es un poco más brillante y optimista, pero su canción sigue siendo la misma.
